Straight answers to the questions we hear most from aspiring Maine Guides.
Most students complete our training in 3 days to 10 weeks, depending on which format they choose. After course completion, you still need to pass the State written and oral exams in Augusta. From enrollment to licensed guide, most students finish within 2–6 months.
Our 3-Day Intensive is $595, the 10-Week Online Group is $650, and 1:1 Private Training starts at $850 per classification. Field Training Week, Mock Exam Day, and other workshops are priced individually. All group courses require a $200 non-refundable deposit. In addition, the State charges its own application and exam fees — check the official MDIFW website for current amounts.
While outdoor experience is helpful, it's not required. Our curriculum is designed to take you from wherever you currently are and prepare you for both the State exam and real-world guiding. Many successful graduates started with modest outdoor experience but left ready to run trips.
We're a growing school and our pass-rate data will be published as our first cohorts complete the State exam. What we can tell you: our curriculum is built specifically around what the Warden Service tests, and our instruction is scenario-heavy and field-weighted. We don't guarantee a pass — no honest school can — but we prepare you thoroughly and support you through any retest.
We'll send a full what-to-bring list when you enroll. At minimum, you'll want field-appropriate clothing, a compass, and a Maine Gazetteer. For the State exam, you'll need a 2019-or-newer edition of the DeLorme/Garmin Maine Atlas — we advise you on this in class. Most navigation and safety equipment is provided for in-class work.
It's not the end of the road. We'll work with you to identify exactly where you fell short and build a focused plan for your retest. Many students who struggle the first time go on to pass after targeted preparation on their specific gaps — which is where our 1:1 Private Training and Mock Exam Day shine.
Yes. Our 10-Week Online Group is designed specifically for students who can't attend in person or who live outside Maine. We also offer 1:1 Private Training in a hybrid format. For the State exam itself, you'll need to travel to Augusta — that part can't be done remotely.
The four classifications are: Hunting (big and small game guiding), Fishing (freshwater and fly fishing trips), Recreation (hiking, camping, and general outdoor adventure), and Tidewater (coastal and marine guiding). Each requires passing its own separate exam — you can hold one or multiple classifications. We prepare students for all four. See the full breakdown.
We're pursuing VA approval so veterans can use GI Bill benefits for their Maine Guide training. If you qualify, this can be a powerful next chapter after service. Check our Veterans page for the latest status and how to apply.
The State exams test navigation using the DeLorme/Garmin Maine Atlas and Gazetteer, and Maine requires a 2019-or-newer edition. Older editions may have outdated maps and won't match what the exam expects. We'll make sure you have the right one before your test date.
