While experience in the outdoors is helpful, our curriculum is designed to take you from wherever you are and prepare you for the State exam. Many successful graduates started with limited guiding experience and left as confident, working guides.
Most students complete our intensive training in 3 days to 10 weeks depending on the format chosen. After completing the course, you'll need to pass the State written and oral exams in Augusta. The full process from enrollment to licensed guide typically takes 2-6 months.
Hunting covers big and small game guiding. Fishing focuses on freshwater and fly fishing trips. Recreation encompasses hiking, camping, and general outdoor adventure. Tidewater is for coastal and marine-based guiding. Each requires a separate exam, and you can hold multiple classifications.
We're pursuing VA approval for veteran benefits. If you qualify for GI Bill benefits, Maine Guide training can be a powerful next chapter after service. Contact us to learn more about eligibility and the application process.
We've designed our curriculum specifically around what examiners look for. However, if you don't pass on the first try, we'll work with you to identify gaps and prepare for your retest. Many students who initially struggle go on to pass after additional focused preparation.
